To help demystify underwriting processes and procedures, Bright Grey, the Edinburgh based protection specialist, has published an underwriting guide that aims to help financial advisers manage their clients’ expectations when applying for a Bright Grey plan. It gives ‘hints and tips’ for completing the Bright Grey application form and covers loadings guidelines for specific medical conditions. It also describes the different types of evidence and what they involve as well as medical and financial underwriting limits.
Stuart Johnson, Chief Underwriter at Bright Grey says: “Initial feedback has been excellent. The guide was designed to provide information that will help financial advisers to guide their clients to quicker decisions. In my view insurance should be straightforward. Tell the truth, pay the premiums and we pay the claim.”
Commenting on the guide, Peter Chadborn, principal at Chadborn Baker & Kearle said: “Bright Grey’s Underwriting Guide confirms the company’s fresh approach to underwriting. The message is essentially a reminder that it is all about disclosure. Not only the importance of accuracy and full disclosure on behalf of the client but also the need for further relevant questioning from the adviser to avoid unnecessary delays in the underwriting process.
The guide is comprehensive and has already proved extremely useful in giving our advisers a fuller understanding of wide ranging medical conditions and the associated underwriting requirements.
More importantly, however, it enables the adviser to position the client’s expectations of the potential outcome should additional underwriting be required.”
Also commending the guide is Peter de Dulin, an IFA and a member of the Sage network, who said: “I like the way the guide is set out. It gives details of 55 conditions, symptoms, and possible effects, which makes my life a lot easier. Other providers’ guides list far fewer conditions. As usual with Bright Grey, the guide is written in plain English, and is easy to understand. I only wish every life company was as innovative and informative.”
