Because our people, community
and environment matter

Our environment

  • Waste – by separating the material that we throw away, we reduce the amount of waste going into landfill. Simple things like putting plastic cups in separate bins for recycling all help!
  • Electrical and electronic equipment – we aim to reduce the quantity of electrical and electronic equipment going to landfill and increase its re-use, recovery and recycling in accordance with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations.
  • Toner cartridges – we use recycled toner cartridges and buy remanufactured cartridges.
  • Old mobile phones – the Royal London Group works in partnership with Redeem to recycle unwanted mobile phones and raise money for charity.

Equipment like our computers, photocopier and fax machines all still use energy when left on stand-by mode. This means higher electricity bills and increased carbon dioxide emissions. That’s why we encourage our people to switch off their PCs/laptops, monitors and printers when they leave the office.

We all know that air pollution is on the increase and there are a number of practical alternatives that we can all consider when planning our journey.

  • Car sharing
  • Cycling
  • Walking
  • Public transport

We encourage our people to think about their journeys and promote greener commuting.

This scheme is available to our people and is designed to encourage cycling to work, in line with the Department for Transport's own Cycle to Work scheme. It's a great way to help the environment and build exercise into your day.

Carbon offsetting was introduced on 1 January 2007 for all business flights. This means that a £2 per flight levy is automatically added to each single domestic booking made via our travel management company, Portman Travel. This money is sent to The Woodland Trust, a registered charity, who plant sufficient trees to offset the carbon produced by these flights.

We also take advantage of today's technology and have conference calls, webinars and use other software packages that bring people together without even leaving the office!

Our society

Having Royal London Group as our parent means that we can be involved in a wide range of schemes all of which can make a difference.

Royal London introduced an employee-volunteering scheme called 'Volunteer 2day'. This scheme allows our people to take up to 2 days each year of company time to volunteer in the community.

So far we've raised funds, volunteered and sponsored various local community groups such as:

  • Barnardos Scotland
  • The Water of Leith Conservation Trust
  • MS Trust
  • St Colombas Hospice
  • Abbeyhill Primary School
  • Marie Curie Cancer Care
